I find as I travel teaching and training that there are common issues that I see in the connection between horses and riders. Today in horse sport, equestrians are questioning what they are seeing, more and more. A growing movement of equestrians are not satisfied with the judges scores determining the success of the teams that are competing, particularly in dressage. I have opinions on the role of judges and the tests as well, but I would like to focus on what problems people seem to be having with their own horse, and use that as a springboard to share some of my training philosophy.
For instance one client started working with me because she could not sit the horse's trot as she began training the trot to 'lengthen'. She asked for help with this. It ended up being a 'connection' problem, and not what she had thought and what she had been told - that her horse just had a 'difficult trot'. The program she works with is allowing her to connect and now - truly feel some lengthened strides.
